New Extreme Wild Wings restaurant brings kick of heat to SLO County
Just over three months ago, Extreme Wild Wings owner Hardip “Moe” Virk had never heard of Arroyo Grande, much less expected to open a chicken wing restaurant there.
But when Virk, his wife Adriana and son Pravan were looking for a place to expand their existing chicken wing business in Delano, the Bakersfield family happened upon an open listing on the Central Coast.
Virk, a former trucker, was less involved with the food side of the business prior to the expansion, with his brother handling most of the existing shop’s day-to-day business.
Now, after a whirlwind 36 days of renovations late last year at the new business’ home at 1540 E Grand Ave. — during which the family completely overhauled the former French Fries USA space, sleeping in the building at times to avoid hotel costs — the Virks are gearing up for their business’ grand opening.
“We didn’t even know where Arroyo Grande was — our whole life, all we did, our whole family, was just worked, worked, worked,” Virk said. “When I say everybody, I’m talking to everybody — my brother, my dad, me, so we don’t have time to travel.”
“First thing, we went to the beach to go look at that, and we said, ‘Hey, there’s a lot of potential here,’” Virk continued.
New chicken wing spot serves up 26 spice flavors
Virk said after the family made the decision to move to Arroyo Grande, almost all of their free time has gone into creating a fun space and top-notch menu.
Adriana Virk said the move brought mixed feelings but is the right chance to take.
“We’re basically dropping everything over there, coming here, but the other part of me was like, ‘You know what? Maybe we need a change. Maybe we need a different atmosphere,’” Adriana Virk said. “Life is about taking challenges and trying something new, and if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, it’s OK — then you get up and just do something else.”
The business technically opened around two months ago in a soft opening window, but it’s reaching its final shape now, gaining a beer license and completing the renovations late last month.
The dining room is covered with sports memorabilia from teams across California and features several large TVs, so customers can kick back and enjoy a casual meal while watching sports.
Virk included a handful of games, including several claw machines for kids and a pool table for adults, to give guests more to do while they enjoy their meals, he said.
On the menu, Extreme Wild Wings boasts a full roster of 26 spice options, from a tasty lemon pepper all the way up to Diablo, the hottest wet sauce on the menu.
Wings can be ordered boneless or traditional in orders of 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 100 pieces, allowing customers to mix up to five flavors and eight dipping sauces with the maximum order size, Virk said.
Most customers will opt for the 10-, 15- or 20-piece options, which start at $14.99 for boneless wings and $15.99 for bone-in wings up to $24.99 and $27.99, respectively, for the 20-piece combo. For those feeding a party, 100 wings top out at $104.99 for bone-in wings.
In addition to wings, the restaurant offers a standard range of pub fare and several different burgers.
Virk’s personal favorite flavor, peach habañero, is an Extreme Wild Wings original and is made fresh every day, just like the majority of the chicken wing sauces and all of the restaurant’s menu items, he said.
An exclusive “Dragon’s Heat” sauce that goes even above the Diablo flavor is also in the works, and will come with its own timed challenge: 10 pieces in seven minutes, Virk said. Challengers will need to sign a waiver, and winners will get their meal for free, a commemorative T-shirt and a picture on the restaurant’s wall, he said.
Virk said he likely won’t be braving the Dragon’s Heat sauce, preferring sauces with more taste than kick.
“My thing is, I like to taste the flavor — some people like spice and they want their lips burning,” Virk said. “Everybody has a tolerance — I can say I’m at 45% and Adriana’s at 85%.
Grand opening coming later this month
Virk said while the business has been expanding its hours over the past few weeks, the family is planning to hold a grand opening for the business in either late January or early February.
A date will be announced via the restaurant’s Instagram page, @extremewildwings.
The restaurant can also be reached for more information at 805-202-8833.
