‘BlacKkKlansman’ director Spike Lee is coming to Cal Poly for a Q&A

Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee is coming to Cal Poly for a “moderated discussion.”

The acclaimed director, screenwriter, actor and producer will participate in a moderated question-and-answer session on Feb. 10 at the Cal Poly Recreation Center’s Main Gym, according to event promoter ASI Events.

Prior to the Q&A, Lee will “engage in conversation with a student and a faculty member” during a Cal Poly Cross Cultural Centers dinner at the Recreation Center’s MultiActivity Center.

Best known for racially charged movies including “Do The Right Thing” and “Malcolm X,” Lee won an Academy Award for his screenplay of “BlacKkKlansman,” about an African-American police detective who sets out to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.

Tickets for the Cross Cultural Centers dinner, which runs 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 10, cost $100.

Admission to Lee’s Q&A, which starts at 7:10 p.m. Feb. 10, is free for Cal Poly students, faculty and staff members with valid IDs. Tickets for that event cost $20 apiece for community members and go on sale at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, via Cal Poly Ticket Office.

Spike Lee isn’t the only movie icon scheduled to visit San Luis Obispo in coming months.

The stars of “Napoleon Dynamite” will attend a 15th-anniversary screening of the classic indie comedy on Feb. 4 at the Performing Arts Center. The sold-out movie showing will be followed by a question-and-answer session with “Napoleon Dynamite” actors Jon Heder, Jon Gries and Efren Ramirez.
