Prep football roundup: Morro Bay wins again, 34-29 over San Marcos

Morro Bay continued its feel-good start to the 2016 season with a 34-29 home victory Friday night over San Marcos behind a do-it-all performance from Brandon McGinley.

The senior running back had 196 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries and also chipped in with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Cecil and four catches for 20 yards.

McGinley’s 23-yard touchdown run with 2:47 left in the game proved to be the game winner, and an interception by Danny Koval sealed the victory.

It’s the Pirates’ second straight win to start the season following their winless 2015 campaign.

“It’s a good feeling,” head coach David Kelley said. “Hats off to the kids for staying the course and believing what we’re doing. They bought in, and they’re doing it.”

Koval also finished with 75 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Luis Alvarez added 53 yards on six carries.

And sophomore quarterback Aidan Moriarty was 5 for 9 for 60 yards through the air as Morro Bay (2-0) racked up 395 yards of total offense.

San Marcos (0-2) jumped ahead 7-0 after the first quarter before Morro Bay went ahead 13-7 at halftime. The score was tied 21-21 after the third quarter.

Paso Robles 51, Frontier (Bakersfield) 33

The Bearcats (2-0) scored 30 points in the second quarter to pull away from Frontier (1-1) behind Christian Erickson’s three touchdowns. The senior running back had 133 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 48 yards. Mark Armstrong had eight carries for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Elijah Palomino added another rushing touchdown.

Quarterback Steven Schouten also had a strong performance, throwing for 179 yards — including a 54-yard touchdown to Daniel Giroux — on 7-for-14 passing. Schouten also rushed for a score.

Eleven different Frontier players had a carry, and Titans had 336 yards on the ground. Paso Robles finished with 459 yards of total offense.

The score was tied 7-7 after the first quarter before the teams combined for 50 points in the second quarter. Paso Robles scored two more touchdowns in the final period.

Ventura 22, Atascadero 19

Ventura scored the go-ahead touchdown with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter, capping a 15-play, 96 yard drive. Ventura then forced a fumble on Atascadero’s final possession to close out the game.

Ventura led 7-3 at halftime, but Atascadero kicked a field goal, and after recovering an onside kick, scored a touchdown on a 51-yard pass from Carson Rinkenberger to Logan Sprouse. Rinkenberger threw 145 of his 156 yards in the second half for the Greyhounds.

Broc Mortensen carried the ball 47 times for 222 yards for Ventura — 11 coming on the final drive.

Bishop Diego 40, Mission Prep 0

Mission Prep became the latest victim of Bishop’s hot start to the season, falling to the fellow Catholic school from Santa Barbara played at Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium on a relatively chilly summer night.

While the weather may have been cold, Bishop Diego certainly was not.

The Cardinals compiled 431 yards of total offense while holding Mission Prep to only 127. Bishop accrued 349 rushing yards on the game.

Most of Mission Prep's offense came on the ground, with seniors Brayden Corona and Branson Morain rushing for 36 and 53 yards, respectively. Mission Prep only converted 1 of 12 third-down attempts, as the Bishop defense was simply too overpowering.
