Prep football roundup: Atascadero ends losing streak with big win over Madera

A banged up Atascadero team got a much-needed 45-21 win on the road Friday night against Madera.

Atascadero’s Elijah Cooks scored two touchdowns, including one on a 60-yard punt return that was part of a 21-0 first quarter outburst to end the Greyhounds’ four-game losing streak.

Filling in for an injured Tysen Delkener, Arik Machado scored two touchdowns on the ground; one from 42 yards out and another from 1 yard out. Riley Mete and Kobe Cross added a touchdown each. Logan Armstrong tacked on a 27-yard field goal.

“We did a nice job establishing the run game. I was really happy about that,” Atascadero head coach Vic Cooper said.

Atascadero (2-4), which is down seven starters according to Cooper, will be on the road again next week against Pioneer Valley before a much-needed bye week leading into league play.

“Hopefully we can get a couple guys back soon,” Cooper said.

Nipomo 26, Cabrillo 0

Nicolas Robledo had two touchdown passes to lead Nipomo to a rout of Cabrillo.

Robledo hooked up with Spencer Pool and Jedu Matauti-Reyes for the scores, while Michael Jordan and Isaac Bausley scored a touchdown apiece on the ground. Bausley added an interception on defense.

Nipomo (2-3) bounced back from last week’s 28-7 loss to Santa Ynez and will next play at Arroyo Grande.

“The defense played very well,” Nipomo head coach Tony Dodge said. “We shut down their run game and had two interceptions. We needed it.”

Santa Ynez 45, Templeton 7

Sophomore running back Shane Simonin paced the Eagles with 109 yards on seven carries in their loss to Santa Ynez.

Gaston Bryars scored Templeton’s lone touchdown, on a pass from Jack Trimble, and finished with 25 yards on three receptions. Trimble was 10 of 16 for 88 yards, the touchdown and an interception.

Templeton (1-3) next plays at Lompoc on Friday.

Dos Pueblos (Goleta) 49, San Luis Obispo 6

The Tigers’ only score in their lopsided loss came on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jevon Montgomery in the first quarter.

Despite the loss, San Luis Obispo’s defense forced three turnovers: an interception by Graham Gilmore and fumble recoveries by Daniel Duffy and Kevin Creel.

San Luis Obispo (0-5) next faces St. Joseph on Friday at home.

Riverdale Christian 55, Coast Union 16

Coast Union (0-4) running back Alan Ramirez had 165 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries in his team’s loss.

League play begins for Coast Union next week on the road against Cuyama Valley.
