Orcutt native Kilian Garland makes final 16 at Pismo Beach Open
Kilian Garland had to wait until the second day of the inaugural World Surf League Pismo Beach Open to impress the judges, but when he finally hit the water he showed why he’s one of the favorites to win the Qualifying Series event.
The Orcutt native and Santa Barbara resident won his Round 2 and Round 3 heats Saturday to make the final 16. Garland, currently ranked No. 9 in the North America Region, is chasing his second QS event win and has a chance to repeat as North America QS Regional champion with a runner-up finish or better Sunday.
Arroyo Grande surfers Braden Jones and Joel Bishop failed to advance to the final day of competition, finishing outside of the top two in their respective Round 2 heats during Saturday’s action.
The contest will resume at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with 16 surfers competing in four heats in Round 4. That will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals featuring one-on-one heats until the first Pismo Beach Open champion is crowned.
