Prep roundup: Arroyo Grande girls volleyball falls to San Marcos in home opener
The Arroyo Grande girls volleyball team had its chances Tuesday against a talented San Marcos team, winning the second game to make it 1-1 heading into a third game.
But San Marcos came from behind in the third game and eventually won 3-1 in the Eagles’ home opener.
Senior outside hitter Sam Oliver led Arroyo Grande with 14 kills in San Marcos’ 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 25-18 win. Brynn Thoming chipped in with 11 kills, and Sabina Selzer had seven blocks.
“There is a lot we can take from this game, good and bad,” Arroyo Grande first-year head coach Chip Blaney said. “I’m pretty happy with a lot of things I saw. They were really good, scrappy.”
Arroyo Grande (0-2) rotated setters all night. Macie Lachemann got the start and had 32 assists, while Eden Mostajo added 21 in relief.
The Eagles open league play Thursday against Righetti (2-2) in Arroyo Grande.
Paso Robles 3, Nipomo 0
Paso Robles remained undefeated on the season with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-15 nonleague win over Nipomo on Tuesday. The Bearcats’ Gabbie Morrison had 20 assists and six kills, and teammate Kiara Gable recorded 10 kills and 14 digs.
Madison Morrison added six kills and 17 digs for Paso Robles (4-0), which starts league play Thursday at St. Joseph.
Leanna Jackson had five kills for Nipomo, and Nana Lemons added 13 digs for the Titans (2-2), who open league play Thursday at Lompoc.
Faith Christian 3, Shandon 0
Shandon lost its second match of the season Tuesday at home against Faith Christian in three sets, 25-10, 25-7, 25-12. Shandon plays host to Kings Christian at home Thursday.
Atascadero 3, Cabrillo 1
The Greyhounds won 25-15, 19-25, 27-25, 25-17. Taylor Degnan had 16 kills and 14 digs, and Abby Wright had eight kills and 16 assists. Hannah Hagy distributed 25 assists and had five kills.
Atascadero begins league play Thursday at home against San Luis Obispo.
Templeton 3, San Luis Obispo 0
The Eagles swept 25-17, 25-16, 25-18. Lauren Reeves led Templeton with 10 kills, and Carra Kruse had 13 assists.
Dasha Novotny had eight kills and five blocks, and Sophie Janette had 10 assists and two blocks. Molly Eppright chipped in seven digs for the Tigers (2-2).
Morro Bay 3, Coast Union 0
The Pirates swept 25-15, 25-13, 25-15. Ellie Friar had a team-high 11 kills and two blocks, and Ally Rose added six aces and two kills. Erin DesJardins registered 14 assists and a pair of blocks.
Morro Bay (3-2) plays host to Santa Ynez on Thursday.
Realy Barbosa had eight kills, and Gigi Stoothoff added seven kills and two blocks for Coast Union (0-4). Ailyne Casas and Hailey Zinn also had seven kills.
Coast Union plays Nipomo at home on Wednesday.
BOYS WATER POLO
San Luis Obispo 14, Nipomo 6
Mark Olson had six goals, and Shey Dorji and John Erbstoesser each had two goals to lead the Tigers in a nonleague match. Four other San Luis Obispo players had goals.
Jordan Troy recorded 10 saves for the Tigers (2-1), who play Cabrillo on Thursday.
Santa Ynez 13, Atascadero 4
Adam Fagundes had two goals, and Kyler Warren added another for the Greyhounds. Goalkeeper James Fisher also had a goal, scoring from the opposite end of the pool after the ball deflected of a Santa Ynez defender with a few seconds left in the quarter. Fisher also had 14 saves for Atascadero (1-1), which plays in the Conjeno Tournament this weekend.
Arroyo Grande 15, Cabrillo 4
Michael Criswell had a game-high four goals, and both Shane Hoover and Bear Waymire had three goals apiece. Jared Martin had four saves, and Ethan Mankins added two more.
Morro Bay 17, Pioneer Valley 10
The Pirates earned their first win of the season behind seven goals from Ricardo Dalobra. Oliver Putnam had three more in one half of play, and Caden Bugati, Andrew Monrow and Marcel Addis-Jackson each scored their first varsity goals for Morro Bay (1-2).
GIRLS TENNIS
Mission Prep 18, Pioneer Valley 0
Julia Wagner won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 and Avery Munster won 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 as the Royals swept the Panthers. Singles player Grace Cegelski also swept (6-0, 6-2, 6-0), and the team of Maggie Ma and Izzy Marshall won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.
The tandems of Kathryn Abbate and Mackenzie Poole and Maggie Spear and Sawyer Smith each swept for Mission Prep (2-0, 1-0 PAC 8).
Paso Robles 11, St. Joseph 7
Singles player Siena Berry won 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, and Aneva Mason won 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 to help the Bearcats win their league opener. The doubles team of Becca Slason and Mia Venturini won 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, and Livia Rambo and Alex Fletes also took two out of three (6-2, 6-2, 3-6).
Paso Robles improves to 3-2 and 1-0 in the PAC 8.
San Luis Obispo 13, Atascadero 5
Nicoline Breytenbach swept to lead the Greyhounds 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 and the doubles team of Courtney Basden and Sarah Wulff won two out of three. Atascadero (1-1, 0-1 PAC 8). plays at Righetti on Wednesday.
Arroyo Grande 15, Righetti 3
The Eagles were led by their three doubles teams, which only dropped one game in nine sets, as they won their opening PAC 8 match of the season.
In singles, freshman Josceline Ramirez won 6-1, 6-1, and Erika Egg won 6-2, 6-0.
A.G. moved to 4-0 overall on the season and will next play Mission Prep on Wednesday at Cal Poly.
GIRLS GOLF
Arroyo Grande 236, Righetti 292
The Arroyo Grande girls golf team beat Righetti at the par-35 Cypress Ridge Golf Course. Arroyo Grande’s Delanie Dunkle and Righetti’s Sarah Fouratt were co-medalists, each carding a 40.
Kinsey McBryde followed teammate Dunkle with a 42, and Karley Pinkerton added a 46 for the Eagles.
San Luis Obispo 250, Atascadero 256
Isabel Carpenter took medalist honors with an even par 35 on Tuesday to lead San Luis Obispo past Atascadero at Chalk Mountain.
Morgan Humphrey finished second with a 46 to lead Atascadero.
Also for San Luis Obispo, Emily Lemiere shot a 47.
