Roommates in argument were wrestling over shotgun when it went off, SLO police say

A San Luis Obispo man was arrested on suspicion of multiple weapons violations after an argument with a roommate led to a shots-fired incident at the Silver City Mobile Home Lodge.

Police responded about 5:45 p.m. to the mobile home park on the 3800 block of South Higuera Street after receiving reports of shots fired, according to Lt. John Bledsoe of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

Robert Hanna, 48, and his roommate were allegedly involved in a physical altercation inside one of the homes when Hanna reached for a shotgun, Bledsoe said. Before Hanna could point the gun at his roommate, the other man grabbed it away and the two began wrestling over the weapon, Bledsoe said.

During the altercation, the gun fired into the ceiling, Bledsoe said. The roommate eventually gained control of the shotgun, went outside and called 911. Hanna then allegedly retrieved a 9 mm handgun, went outside and began threatening his roommate.

When police arrived, Hanna walked away and officers detained his roommate, who dropped the shotgun, Bledsoe said. Hanna later approached the officers, who ordered him to the ground, where he handed over the handgun in the waistband of his pants.

Police arrested Hanna on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a deadly weapon with intent to commit a felony, criminal threats and brandishing a firearm, Bledsoe said. He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail but has since been released on bail.
