Highway 101 reopened after Atascadero mobile home park fire

A brush fire that set flame to a mobile home park Tuesday in Atascadero destroyed one home and badly damaged another, prompting the CHP shut down Highway 101 in both directions.

The fire, reported about 2:20 p.m., caused the CHP initially to close just the Highway 101 northbound off-ramp at San Diego Way about 2:35 p.m. as a safety precaution because flames had spread to brush near the off-ramp.

The initial report read that three homes in a mobile home park at 9191 San Diego Way were threatened, and the entire mobile home park was evacuated. But the city later said that only two homes were affected and that one sustained major damage while the other was lost.

The freeway was reopened later Tuesday afternoon, and the fire was fully contained, Atascadero police Chief Jerel Haley said.

Haley said the full highway closure was because of the amount of smoke in the area.

No people were hurt in the fire, though a dog possibly died in the incident, according to a statement released by the city.
