Truck bed filled with hay bales catches fire at SLO County gas station

A truck trailer full of hay bales caught fire off of Highway 101 in Atascadero on Saturday afternoon.

At 2:54 p.m., units from Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire at 6280 Morro Road next to the highway, according to a news release from the agency.

A Chevron gas station is located at that address.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a passenger pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer with 48 bales of hay fully engulfed in flames, the news release said.

The fire spread to nearby vegetation but was quickly contained by fire personnel, the release said

Fire personnel were able to stop the spread of the fire beyond the trailer and save the truck, the release said.

The operation took about an hour, ten fire personnel and the city’s backhoe to fully extinguish and cleanup the fire, according to the release.

No fire personnel or civilians were reported injured.
