Wind-blown fire at Nipomo strawberry field burns shop, shed and farm equipment
A wind-blown fire destroyed agricultural structures and equipment at a strawberry farm in Nipomo on Wednesday morning.
The blaze, reported at 9:06 a.m., occurred at a farm on Cherry Blossom Place off Orchard Road, said Adan Orozco, Cal Fire’s public information officer.
A Cal Fire Twitter post said the incident took place near Borega Lane.
Gusty winds up to 30 mph fueled the flames, which caused extensive damage to a shop, a chemical storage shed, a tractor, a small pickup truck and other farm equipment, Orozco said. A couple of piles of wood burned too.
“We don’t know yet how it happened and investigators are on the way,” Orozco said. “Nobody was hurt.”
Orozco said that fire officials are working to open the doors of the building with chemicals and ensure safety.
The buildings and equipment are surrounded by strawberry fields, a dirt lot and dirt roads. No homes were damaged.
“It was basically a lot of farm equipment damage,” Orozco said.
