Street closed in SLO after van crashes into power pole, home catches fire
A van crashed into a building in San Luis Obispo early Tuesday morning, downing multiple power lines and causing a fire in a nearby home.
Firefighters were called to the 1800 block of Santa Barbara Avenue just before 5 a.m. on reports of a van into a building and a structure fire on nearby Morro Street.
When firefighters arrived, they found a two-story home on fire, said SLO Fire Department Battalion Chief Neal Berryman. All of the occupants had left the home when they heard the crash and were not inside when the house caught fire. Their cat, however, was lost in the flames, Berryman said.
No person was injured in the crash or the fire.
The fire is still under investigation, Berryman said, but it’s believed that the power lines caused the house fire when they went down. About 34 people lost power in the incident; power was expected to be restored by 8 p.m., according to PG&E.
The 1800 block of Santa Barbara Street was shut down in both directions throughout the day, and it remained closed about 5 p.m.
