Paso man killed in late-night crash on Hwy. 101
An 82-year-old Paso Robles man was killed after a car crash Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 10:35 p.m., Richard Kent Sauret, 82, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado north on Highway 101, south of Wellsona Road, in the left-turn lane, the CHP said. Meanwhile, 24-year-old Jorge Gomez Ayala of San Miguel was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon south on Highway 101, north of Wellsona Road, the CHP said.
Sauret then turned left directly into the path of the GMC, the CHP said, and Ayala was unable to stop before the vehicles collided.
Sauret was pronounced dead on the scene.
Ayala suffered major injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle, the CHP said. He was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, the CHP said. The collision is under investigation.
Sauret was a former president of the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area and served as a vineyard consultant for St. Peter of Alcantara Vineyard in the Paso Robles area, according to the Guyomar Wine Cellar’s website.
