Two quakes shake SLO County residents Wednesday

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude estimate of 3.9 shook San Luis Obispo County residents awake early Wednesday morning. A second quake was felt hours later, at 10:13 a.m., with a preliminary magnitude of 3.0.

The first quake, at 3:58 a.m., was centered about 5.6 miles west of Templeton, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The 10:13 a.m. quake was centered in the same area 6 miles west of Templeton. In between, there were five aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 1.1 to 2.4.

In comments on The Tribune’s Facebook page, residents throughout the North County and along the North Coast reported feeling strong shaking about 4 a.m. Nearly all residents who commented from Paso Robles, Atascadero or Templeton said the quake was jolting.

“Thought my front room windows were going to break,” wrote Linda Carroll of Atascadero. “My cats went in one direction, me in the other!”

“I was already awake,” said Shirley Price of Paso Robles. “It was a big jolt and then rolling. It was like being on a boat.”

Some Los Osos and Cambria residents also reported feeling some shaking.

“Pretty big jolt felt in Cambria, then a little shaking,” Joyce Jewett Vertrees said. “Woke me right up!”

“Here in Baywood: a jolt, then rolling,” Terry Eselun said. “My sweet Lilly (dog) didn’t stir.”

There are no tsunami warnings, advisories, watches or threats, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers.
