Multiple crashes cause injuries, halt traffic on SLO County highways
Emergency officials responded to multiple traffic collisions on two San Luis Obispo County highways late Friday afternoon.
The crashes occurred on Highway 101 south of San Luis Obispo and in the North County, and on Highway 1 near Cayucos, according to the CHP and Cal Fire.
About 4:30 p.m., a car collided with a fuel tanker on southbound Highway 101 near Avila Beach Drive, emergency officials said.
Cal Fire tweeted about 5 p.m. that traffic in that area would be delayed at least an hour. One person was injured, but there was no leak from the tanker, according to Cal Fire.
About 10 minutes after that crash, a big rig collided with a Chrysler sedan near the intersection of Highway 101 and Wellsona Road south of San Miguel.
One person was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center with major injuries, according to the CHP.
A CHP spokesman said traffic on Highway 101 was slowed to Paso Robles while Cal Fire and Paso Robles Fire crews cleared the scene.
Photos from the crash posted to Twitter show what appear to be thousands of carrots spilled on the side of the road.
As officials worked to clear those crashes, a third collision occurred between two vehicles on Highway 1 and Ocean Boulevard in southern Cayucos.
It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries in that crash. The CHP said emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, and traffic on Highway 1 was backed up to northern Morro Bay.
This story will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
