Jamie Irons wins Morro Bay mayor; Marlys McPherson, ‘Red’ Davis take council seats
Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons retained his seat Tuesday, beating out challengers Tina Metzger and Betty Winholtz, while Marlys McPherson and Robert “Red” Davis won the two available Morro Bay City Council seats.
Irons garnered a 41.5 percent vote while McPherson and Davis took 32.64 and 30.2 percent of the vote, respectively, with all precincts reporting in the unofficial tally.
Metzger earned 36.6 percent and Winholtz had 21.5 percent of the tally.
Incumbents Noah Smukler and Christine Johnson did not seek re-election.
The three names that appeared on the ballot for council were Davis, McPherson and Richard E.T. Sadowski. Laura Cogan’s name also appeared on the ballot, however she pulled out of the race due to a death in her family.
All of the candidates touted their leadership skills and promised to protect Morro Bay’s natural beauty and wildlife.
The City Council has selected a site off of Highway 1 and South Bay Boulevard for the community’s sewage treatment and water reclamation project. It’s scheduled for completion in 2021.
All of the candidates said they were disappointed that the Cayucos Sanitary District is not working with the city to build the sewer plant.
