If all goes as planned, the Spirit of San Luis restaurant at the county airport will soon be owned by the former owners of Gus’s Grocery in San Luis Obispo.

A legal notice of the pending sale of the restaurant and bar has been posted.

Spirit of San Luis owners Doug and Julie Wagnon — who have owned the business for more than 30 years — have agreed to sell it to Mike and Ellen Stanton for $269,500, according to a legal notice printed in the July 13 edition of The Tribune.

The Stantons recently sold Gus’s Grocery, a deli near the city’s train station on Osos Street, to its longtime general manager Shannon Koester.

Doug Wagnon declined to comment on the pending sale of the business at 925 Airport Drive which features views of planes departing and arriving.

Wagnon said that the business has been in escrow before and he wants to see the completion of the transaction through before making any public comment.

The Stantons couldn’t be reached for comment.

A previous attempt by the Wagnons to sell the restaurant to Mary, Adam and Eva Verdin, announced in 2015, fell through after an escrow process.

“We decided not to move forward for personal and business reasons,” said Mary Verdin in an email to The Tribune this week. “However we are regular customers and intend to stay as such with Mike Stanton’s purchase. We are excited and happy for all involved.”

The Wagnons first announced plans to sell the business in 2014, saying they were looking forward to retiring and “getting fresh ideas and younger people” in to manage the restaurant.

At the time, the Wagnons said they weren’t in a hurry to sell and would wait for the right offer.

The pending sale notice to creditors stated that the transfer of the business and license will take place “only after the transfer has been approved by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.”
