Former SLO County baseball star makes his MLB debut — and hits first home run
Former San Luis Obispo County baseball star Dylan Beavers has reached the top level of professional baseball.
Beavers, a 24-year-old right fielder and former Mission Prep star from Paso Robles, debuted with the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 16, going 1 for 5 versus the Houston Astros.
He has since tallied six hits in 20 at bats, including his first big league home run on Thursday, a right field laser in a 5-4 loss to the Astros.
“I couldn’t have dreamt it any better,” Beavers told The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) prior to his debut after being informed of his promotion. “I’ve been looking forward to this moment my entire life.”
Beavers said that he immediately called his parents, Scott and Shanlee Beavers, to let them know of the news.
“My dad, I don’t think he believed me for a second, and then my mom was overwhelmed with emotion,” Beavers told MASN. “They were super proud. I couldn’t be here without them.”
Beavers also informed his hitting coach, Mike Murphy, whom he credited for believing in him since he was 9 years old.
“I love baseball, showing up, hitting and putting in work, the long term (process of) getting better and the goal of getting to be where I want to be,” Beavers said. “You have bad days, but you have to keep going to get to where you want.”
Beavers said he’d strive to slow the game down and treat it as he normally would once he set foot in a major league ballpark.
The former Mission Prep star also played for the San Luis Obispo Blues summer league team, UC Berkeley’s team, and the USA National baseball team.
He was drafted No. 33 overall by the Orioles in 2022.
As a senior at Mission Prep in 2019, Beavers put up monster numbers, including a .512 batting average, 12 home runs and 36 RBI.
