SLO-Nipomo game postponed, Mission Prep and Morro Bay win in Week 4 of SLO County football
In Week 4 of SLO County football, Mission Prep and Morro Bay won their latest matchups.
Atascadero and Paso Robles both lost, but will face off against each other next week in their rivalry match.
San Luis Obispo and Nipomo meanwhile had their game postponed until Saturday at 1 p.m. due to a power outage in Nipomo. After one quarter of play, it became too dark to continue the game.
Update on Sept. 14: SLO defeats Nipomo in postponed matchup
After a power outage on Friday night, the Tigers and Titans faced off on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Tigers (3-1) came out on top 17-14.
Both teams went scoreless in the first quarter before the Tigers and Titans (0-3-1) had one touchdown each in the second period. In the third quarter, the Tigers found the endzone and pulled ahead 14-7.
The Titans managed a field goal in the fourth quarter, but another Tigers touchdown gave the Tigers the win.
San Luis Obispo faces Morro Bay on the road. Nipomo will play Santa Ynez at home.
Atascadero 23, South (Bakersfield) 38
The Greyhounds led at halftime 16-15 in a home matchup against South High School from Bakersfield, but Atascadero allowed 23 second-half points in the loss.
The Greyhounds (1-2) struggled to make tackles as South pulled away in the final two quarters.
“We got to become a more physical team,” Head Coach Dan Loney said. “We got to tackle better. We got to do a better job up front on the offensive line.”
Loney said the defense struggled to stop South’s run game.
Next week, the Greyhounds take on North County rival Paso Robles.
“It’s always a fun game.” Loney said. “It never matters how good one team is, it’s always a hard-fought game.”
This is Loney’s first matchup against the Bearcats as a head coach after taking over for former head coach Vic Cooper this past offseason.
Atascadero hosts Paso Robles on Friday.
San Luis Obispo and Nipomo postponed due to power outage
A week after a rare tie game for Nipomo against Pioneer Valley, after the Panthers opted out of an overtime period, the Titans faced another unlikely event the next week.
Minutes before the Titans home game against San Luis Obispo, the lights in the stadium and for thousands of Nipomo residents shuttered off. With some daylight left, the Titans and Tigers played the first quarter.
The Tigers were without standout quarterback Jace Gomes, who did not play in the game. Neither the Tigers nor Titans were able to move the ball. After the first quarter, the game was put to a stop at around 7:30 p.m.
Eventually, there was an announcement that both teams would warm up as PG&E tried to bring back power in Nipomo.
However, it was ultimately decided the game would be moved to Saturday at 1 p.m.
Next Friday, San Luis Obispo faces Morro Bay on the road. Nipomo will play Santa Ynez at home.
Mission Prep 30, Santa Ynez 13
The Royals continued their positive momentum against Santa Ynez, a week following a 58-0 win over Kern Valley.
However, the win didn’t come as easy as it did against Kern Valley. Coming into halftime, the Royals (2-1) led 10-7 before Santa Ynez scored a touchdown to go up 13-10.
But the run game for the Royals started to click. Four different players scored on the ground: receiver Jayden Nozil, quarterback Thomas Glenn and running backs Ronnie Kardashian and Miles Thompson.
Kicker Lincoln Bloom sent the ball between the uprights for a field goal.
“We made (Santa Ynez) earn it a bit more,” Head Coach David Schuster said. “Offensively, we had some big pass plays. (Thomas Glenn) did a great job with hid decision making.”
The Royals have come a long way since Week 1 against Sante Fe Christian where the Royals were held scoreless. Schuster said the team made personnel changes that have worked out.
“I felt like we’ve grown up a lot,” Schuster said.
He added leaders on the team have stepped up.
“They’re starting to hold the standard a little bit more and the maturity of the team is improving.”
According to Schuster, the game became “chippy” at points but the Royals’ 20 second half points gave them the win.
Schuster also credited the referees for keeping the game under control when the competition increased.
“I think they did an outstanding job controlling the game and keeping everything in a good spot,” Schuster said.
Mission Prep hosts El Modena on Friday.
Paso Robles 13, Righetti 51
The Bearcats couldn’t find any traction against Righetti.
Paso Robles (1-3) came into the game after three tough matchups against Central Valley schools.
Head Coach Matt Caroll said via text message his team needs to “be consistent offensively and (finish) drives.”
Next week, the Bearcats take on local rival Atascadero.
Both teams are in different leagues, but every year the game proves to be a competitve matchup.
Paso Robles plays at Atascadero on Friday.
Morro Bay 40, Golden Valley 14
The Pirates started out quick and never looked back.
On the first play of the game, receiver John Myers scored 68 yard receiving touchdown from quarterback Sands Doughtery.
After the Pirates (2-2) recovered the kickoff, Myers scored again for another quick score.
The next drive, the Pirates defense forced a turnover on downs, which set up Myers third score of the game.
The Pirates led 40-0 going into halftime.
“I think that everything finally came together,” Head Coach Robert Doughtery said. “We’ve been close a couple of games.”
Doughtery says the team has been preaching finishing drives and being sharper in execution.
Receiver Ryder Busch added two receiving touchdowns while Efrain Hernandez grabbed one passing touchdown. In total, Myers finished with three touchdowns.
“John’s got a lot of potential and he’s got some speed,” Doughtery said. “I think he’s got a lot of ability like a lot of our receivers.”
Morro Bay hosts San Luis Obispo on Friday.
