Tribune’s Best: Vote for SLO County’s Athlete of the Week for Feb. 13-20
Winter playoffs are in full swing, and San Luis Obispo County has seen some big wins thus far in multiple high school sports and outstanding season accomplishments even in defeat.
As the CIF-Central Section postseason continues, here are the latest 11 nominees for “Athlete of the Week” honors in boys and girls athletics. The reader poll celebrates the feats during the week of Feb. 13-20. You may vote as many times as you wish to support your selection for The Tribune’s Athlete of the Week.
After nearly 74,000 votes last week, last week’s winner, for the second time this season, was Brody Naber, of Arroyo Grande boys basketball. Naber received 31,760 votes (43% of the overall tally).
Alexis Acosta, of Nipomo girls soccer, had 24,367 votes, or 33%, in second place, and Corbin Rossi, of Atascadero boys basketball, tallied 7,824 votes, or 12%, for third.
Among the standout playoffs performances, No. 7 Atascadero beat No. 15 Clovis 62-55 in Division 3 to reach the boys basketball semifinals; the No. 13 Mission Prep boys topped No. 12 Hanford in a 69-58 win to move on to the semis. No. 5 Arroyo Grande girls soccer beat No. 4 Redwood to move on to the semis in Division 1.
And Paso Robles wrestling had five athletes move on to state competition (placing 12th of 118 schools) — Peyton Kilber, Joe Ciccarelli, Reily Lowry, Christian Davidson and Leo Kemp.
This week’s poll closes at midnight on Sunday. Remember, this is a fun, unscientific poll, and you can vote as often as you like. To vote again, hit refresh.
Coaches, parents or students may nominate an athlete for next week’s prep poll by emailing nwilson@thetribunenews.com. Please write “Athlete of the Week nominee” in the subject line. Those nominating are asked to provide full player name and school, any key stats and the result of the game. Polls will post weekly on Tuesdays through the end of the school year.
Have fun voting, and good luck in the playoffs!
