Cal Poly parts ways with head football coach after 3 seasons

Cal Poly has parted ways with football head coach Paul Wulff after three seasons.

Cal Poly’s football program announced the end of Wulff’s tenure leading the Mustangs in a news release on Sunday. Wullf took the position in 2022 after the sudden departure of Beau Baldwin.

He went 10-24 over three seasons as the team struggled to build momentum, following up 3-8 campaigns in 2023 and 2024 wtha 4-8 record this year.

Prior to the promotion, Wulff served as the team’s offensive line coach after serving as the associate head coach for three years, the release said.

Wulff led the team to a win in its final game of the season on Saturday — 43-34 over Eastern Washington — after losing six games in a row. The Mustangs finished 2-6 in the Big Sky Conference.

“I want to thank Coach Wulff for his years of service to Cal Poly both as an assistant and a head football coach,” said Cal Poly Athletics Director Carter Henderson. “He represented the Mustangs well and was extremely dedicated to this program. I wish him the absolute best moving forward.”

In the past, Wulff coached at the collegiate level for Eastern Washington, Sacramento State, UC Davis, Iowa State and South Florida, The Tribune previously reported. Wulff also coached in the NFL in 2012 as a senior offensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers.

Cal Poly will conduct a national search for a new head football coach immediately following the announcement on the release.
