Kacey Musgraves’ ‘favorite cake in the world’ is a California classic. Here’s where to get it

Kacey Musgraves really loves Madonna Inn’s iconic pink champagne cake — and she just had to let 20,000 screaming fans know it.

During her sold-out performance at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center) in Los Angeles on Sunday night, Musgraves took a moment between songs to give a shoutout to the inn’s iconic dessert.

It started when Musgraves asked the crowd if they knew of a little place called the Madonna Inn, up in San Luis Obispo. As the crowd cheered, Musgraves went on to detail how cute the all-pink hotel is, as well as their signature dessert.

“They have this thing there called the pink champagne cake?” Musgraves said. “I live for this confection.”

The cake is a local legend itself, designed in the 1960s at the San Luis Obispo hotel and featuring a cloud of whipped cream, with pink chocolate shavings and ribbons on the top.

Musgraves, who visited the Madonna Inn in 2019, said she struck a bargain with the hotel to provide her with a couple of pink champagne cakes in return for concert tickets Sunday night.

“I felt like Cleopatra today,” Musgraves said. “I was like ‘Holy s---! I had cakes hand-delivered.’”

Musgraves also thanked the “Madonna Inn ladies” who drove four hours to deliver the cakes to her.

“I hope they are having a good time wherever they are,” she said.

Amanda Rich, marketing manager for the Madonna Inn, said Musgraves’ team originally reached out to them to ask about shipping cakes down to the singer, but that wasn’t possible because the cakes are so delicate.

“Then they said, ‘Well is there any way that anybody would want to bring us some?’ ” Rich told The Tribune on Monday. “So we’re like ‘Yeah, of course — that’s amazing!’ So myself and another coworker, we drove them down. We had the air conditioning blaring the whole time. We’re like, ‘Oh my god, we can’t mess these up! They have to perfect.’ “

Rich said they delivered the cakes to Musgraves’ dressing room while she wasn’t there and then went and started getting ready for the concert themselves.

She said she did not know that Musgraves was going to give the Inn a shoutout mid-concert, though.

“We had no idea that she was gonna say something on stage,” Rich said. “It just kind of shows the kind of person she is, that she would actually say something, you know, in front of all her fans. It was just amazing.”

In her Instagram story ahead of the concert, Musgraves also shared several pics of the cakes, saying it is her “favorite cake in the entire world.” (The Madonna Inn shared those images in its own Instagram story on Monday morning.)

Musgraves was playing in Los Angeles as part of her Starcrossed: Unveiled tour. Her next leg will take her to Canada, Spain and the Netherlands.
