Why do SLO city manager, attorney receive such high compensation?

The Tribune reported May 4 that the San Luis Obispo city manager and city attorney received $5,000 bonuses, and then reported on the 15 best-paying jobs in SLO County (May 10). I find it interesting that our city manager and city attorney both far exceed our highest-paid occupation. They accomplished that even before their retention bonuses.

I would like to see The Tribune follow up with a third article explaining why our city manager and attorney receive such high compensations. I remember when those of us who chose to live here realized that we would make less money and have a higher cost of living, just for the privilege of living in SLO.
