I feel obligated to respond to a letter on Sept. 3 by David Deick: “Closing Diablo is a dumb decision.”

Diablo Canyon Power Plant produces nuclear waste that lasts for more than 10,000 years. If more roofs were like mine and had photovoltaic panels, we would not even need Diablo. The real “dumb decision” was the opening of Diablo in the first place. My roof makes more electricity than I use — how about your roof, Mr. Deick?
