Closing Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is a dumb decision

Saving Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is California’s highest priority. The nuclear power plant, now slated for closure in 2025, provides the cleanest, cheapest and safest energy this state consumes; 24 hours a day, seven days a week, day and night, wind or no wind. It’s the most reliable public utility this state owns and will produce energy for many more years.

We’re in a drought caused by climate change created by burning fossil fuels; the dumbest thing we could do is shut down a safe, reliable power plant, believing green energy will save us. It will not! Renewable energy is not green, and it is not reliable.

Building and installing solar panels and wind generators produces massive amounts of CO2, consumes acres of pristine landscape, disrupts indigenous habitats, slaughters hundreds of birds, and only works when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

Batteries will not save us! We will need twice the energy to charge them, and as much fossil fuel and resources to build them. Plus, they only last a few years; allowing the fossil fuel industry to sell us more gas or coal to keep the lights on.

Who is really behind the closure of Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant? Mothers For Peace or Big Oil?

David Deick, Atascadero
