San Luis Obispo County will finally get a break from triple-digit heat this week.

Gentle onshore winds and warm inland temperatures will continue to fuel widespread marine low clouds along the coast, with areas of night and morning fog, mist and occasional drizzle expected through the upcoming week.

An upper-level ridge near the California coastline will keep monsoonal moisture well southeast of the Central Coast.

Afternoon northwesterly winds will range from gentle to moderate (8 to 13 mph) along the coast, diminishing to light and variable conditions overnight and into the early morning hours through Thursday.

Coastal valleys, such as San Luis Obispo, will gradually clear later each morning, while many beaches will remain socked in under overcast skies for much of the day — classic “No-Sky July” conditions.

Some rain gauges near the shoreline may even record measurable precipitation due to areas of overnight drizzle.

High temperatures will remain near seasonal averages, with coastal highs in the low to mid-60s, coastal valleys reaching the low to mid-70s and inland areas like Paso Robles climbing into the low 90s.

Beach temperatures will hover in the upper 50s to mid-60s through Tuesday.

As the Mid-State Fair kicks off on Wednesday, cooler-than-average temperatures will prevail, with highs only reaching the mid-80s.

This mild trend is expected to continue into the weekend before heating up into the triple-digit levels toward the end of the fair the following week.

By Friday and into next weekend, strengthening northwesterly winds will help erode the marine layer more effectively, especially along southerly facing beaches such as Cayucos, Avila Beach and Shell Beach.

Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above-normal temperatures from late July into the first week of August, along with an increasing chance of monsoonal moisture reaching Southern California.

Surf report

Due to the lack of significant winds, a 3- to 5-foot northwesterly (295-degree deep water) swell (with an 8- to 11-second period) is forecast along our coastline through Friday morning.

Fresh to strong (19 to 31 mph) northwesterly winds along the California Coastline will generate a 4- to 6-foot northwesterly (305-degree deep water) sea and swell (with a 5- to 9-second period) on Friday afternoon through the weekend.

A 1- to 2-foot southern hemisphere (210-degree deep water) swell (with a 15- to 17- second period) will arrive along our coastline on Wednesday and will remain at this level through Friday, gradually fading away over the weekend.

Surface seawater temperatures will range between 54 and 56 degrees through next weekend.

On this date in weather history (July 13)

1977: Lightning struck a key electrical transmission line in Westchester County, New York, plunging New York City into darkness.

1980: Afternoon highs of 108 degrees at Memphis, Tennessee, 108 degrees at Macon, Georgia, and 105 degrees at Atlanta, Georgia, established all-time records for those three cities. The high of 110 degrees at Newington, Georgia, was just two degrees shy of the state record.
