SLO County’s final 2 Rite Aids will close. Here’s where and when

Rite Aid will close its two remaining stores in San Luis Obispo County as the bankrupt pharmacy chain divests itself of hundreds of its stores across the country.

On Wednesday, Newsweek reported a list of 27 Rite Aids closing in California, which included the final two San Luis Obispo County locations that hadn’t previously been assigned a closure date:

  • San Luis Obispo, 956 Foothill Blvd.
  • Pismo Beach, 531 Five Cities Drive

These two stores join the San Luis Obispo County’s eight other Rite Aids scheduled to close, located in Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay.

The Los Osos and Atascadero locations already closed this year.

Why is Rite Aid closing stores?

The closures come after the pharmacy chain entered voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the District of New Jersey on May 5, Rite Aid said in a news release.

“For more than 60 years, Rite Aid has been a proud provider of pharmacy services and products to our loyal customers,” CEO Matt Schroede said in the release. “While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors.”

“As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible,” he concluded.

In the weeks since the announcement, the company has slowly been adding more of its stores to the closure list as attempts to sell off certain properties were unsuccessful.

When will SLO County Rite Aids close?

Closure dates for the soon-to-shutter local Rite Aids are staggered throughout the coming weeks.

According to store representatives, the location at 1690 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande is slated to close July 27, followed by the 1251 Johnson Ave. store in San Luis Obispo on Aug. 17.

Three Rite Aid stores will close on Aug. 24, located at 2424 Spring St. in Paso Robles, 956 Foothill Blvd. in San Luis Obispo and 740 Quintana Road in Morro Bay, according to store representatives.

The Rite Aid pharmacy on Foothill Blvd. will close on July 30, about a month earlier than the rest of the store.

Representatives for the stores at 1151 Creston Road in Paso Robles, 1207 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande and 531 Five Cities Drive in Pismo Beach declined to share a closure date with The Tribune, citing the company’s media policy.

The company’s media team did not respond to the Tribune’s request for comment as of Wednesday afternoon.
