Breaking News
A deep freeze watch and warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

The National Weather Service warned of a potential deep freeze in parts of San Luis Obispo County starting early Monday morning.

The agency said temperatures could drop to 25 degrees across inland areas of the county starting Monday around 1 a.m.

Impacted areas are expected to include Atascadero, Paso Robles, Lake Nacimiento, San Miguel, Templeton, the Carrizo Plain, Creston and Shandon, according to the Weather Service.

The hard freeze warning will be last through 10 p.m. Monday, though the freezing temperatures may continue into Tuesday morning, according to the agency. A hard freeze watch will be in effect from late Monday through Tuesday morning as a result.

A warning is issued when a hazardous weather event is occurring, imminent or likely, while a watch is issued when the risk of such a weather even is increased, but occurrence, location or timing is still uncertain, according to the Weather Service’s website.

The agency cautioned that livestock and pets should be protected during the warning and watch, as the sub-freezing temperatures could do serious damage to them.

The agency added there could be possible damage to outdoor plumbing, irrigation, vegetation and crops, as well. People were advised to wrap, drain or slow drip their outdoor water pipes to prevent freezing.
