Triple-digit temperatures to scorch SLO County during Mid-State Fair, weather service says
Parts of San Luis Obispo County will experience triple-digit temperatures this week, just in time for the California Mid-State Fair.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for parts of the county from 10 a.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday. That ratchets up to an excessive heat watch in effect Friday morning through Saturday evening, the agency said.
The NWS warned of “dangerously hot conditions” in the interior valleys and mountains of SLO County, including Atascadero, Carrizon Plain, Creston, Lake Nacimiento, Paso Robles, San Miguel, Santa Margarita Lake, Shandon and Templeton.
Parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties will also be affected, the agency said.
While the heat advisory is in place, those areas can expect high temperatures of 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the NWS said.
According to the agency, highs could reach 108 degrees during the period the excessive heat watch is in effect.
“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” the National Weather Service said.
The NWS recommended that folks drink fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors during the heat wave.
“Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances,” the agency said. “This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”
