Record-high temperatures hit San Luis Obispo County earlier this week, but you can expect things to cool off over Memorial Day weekend.

Paso Robles Municipal Airport saw the mercury rise to 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, besting the previous record of 99 degrees set in 2001, according to PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey and the National Weather Service.

“This was also the first triple-digit reading of 2022 in San Luis Obispo County,” Lindsey said via Twitter.

High temperatures elsewhere in San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday weren’t as hot as in Paso Robles. San Luis Obispo saw a high of 77 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, it remained to be seen whether Paso Robles would see another record scorcher.

The previous heat record in Paso Robles for May 25, set in 1951, is 100 degrees. By about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Weather Service was reporting 97 degrees in the North County city.

Around the same time, the temperature gauge at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport was reading 79 degrees.

Heading into the Memorial Day holiday weekend, SLO County can expect temperatures to cool off a bit.

The San Luis Obispo area is forecast to stay in the low 70s throughout the weekend into Monday, the Weather Service said.

The Paso Robles region will likely see temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s, according to the Weather Service.

While those balmy temperatures may seem ideal for outdoor activities, Lindsey warned Wednesday that the winds will pick up.

He’s predicting swift winds between 32 to 46 mph, with gusts to 60 mph beginning Saturday and continuing through Monday.

Lindsey cautioned against boating or fishing in the Pacific Ocean during Memorial Day weekend because of the high winds, noting conditions will be “hazardous.”

The winds will bring a significant sea swell of 12 to 14 feet, Lindsey said.

The strong winds will also cause the foggy marine layer to “deepen,” he said, “with the potential to spill into the inland areas, bringing cooler temperatures with it.

“We’re in the May gray now, that’s for sure,” Lindsey said.
