Get ready for waves up to 12 feet — National Weather Service warns of high surf in SLO County
Monday wasn’t a day for beginner surfers along some of San Luis Obispo County’s beaches.
The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for SLO County and the rest of the Central Coast at noon Monday, warning of large waves throughout the region.
According to the advisory, SLO County shores could see large breaking waves of between 7 to 10 feet, with sets of about 12 feet. The Weather Service also warned of dangerous rip currents and urged people to stay out of the water or at least near lifeguard towers.
“There is an increased risk for drowning due to the dangerous conditions,” the advisory read. “Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.”
People are also advised to stay off rocks and rock jetties, as they “can be deadly locations in such conditions,” according to the advisory.
The advisory is set to expire at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
