A 59 mph gust? National Weather Service issues wind advisory for SLO County

Parts of San Luis Obispo County are under a wind advisory Friday night, thanks to strong Santa Ana Winds gusting throughout the southern half of the state.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for the coast, including the cities of San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Cambria and San Simeon.

The NWS warned of northeast winds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph. Those winds will likely be strongest in the Santa Lucia Mountains, the advisory said.

Earlier Friday, the county had already begun to see some strong wind gusts. The NWS reported a gust of 59 mph at Mount Lowe around 11 a.m., and gusts throughout the rest of the day across the region clocked in between 35 mph and 42 mph.

Gusty winds can blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult; they could also blow down tree limbs and cause power outages, according to the advisory.

Drivers should use extra caution on roadways like Highway 101 and Highway 1 because of gusty cross winds.

The advisory is expected to last through 9 p.m. Saturday.
