SLO County just got drenched. Here’s how much rain fell in your area

A rain storm dumped up to 3 inches in parts of San Luis Obispo County, flooding homes in Oceano and triggering a sewage spill in Pismo Beach.

Oceano saw the heaviest rainfall in the region, receiving 2.95 inches of rain in a 36-hour period, while the Paso Robles Municipal Airport experienced 0.61 inches and the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport in San Luis Obispo saw 1.7 inches of rain.

The driest corner of the county appeared to be Hog Canyon northeast of Paso Robles, which received 0.4 inches of rain in 36 hours.

On Tuesday, large pools of water started collecting along Lakeside Avenue near the Oceano County Airport, after heavy showers hit the community hard during the afternoon.

“As soon as the lightning and stuff started dumping, it came right up to the front door (of my home),” Oceano resident Jim Fernandes said Tuesday. “There wasn’t a county vehicle or a sheriff in the area. The dirt level on this lot rose big time from the last flood.”

Also on Tuesday afternoon, around 500 customers lost power south of Oceano after lightning struck an electrical transformer, causing a fire and downing power lines off Highway 1 near South Halcyon Road.

Heavy rains overwhelmed a lift station in Pismo Beach, leading to the release of about 8,000 gallons of sewage from a manhole at Ocean Boulevard and Morro Avenue, the San Luis Obispo Public Health Department said in a news release.

About 5,000 gallons of treated wastewater were released Tuesday from the South San Luis Obispo County Sanitation District in Oceano, the agency said, but that spill did not appear related to the storm.

More rain was forecast through Wednesday morning, followed by mostly dry weather and “seasonably warm” temperatures on Thursday through Sunday, PG&E meterologist John Lindsey said.
