Sudden freeze brings record-breaking low temperatures to SLO County

After a warm weekend, the Central Coast was hit with a sudden recording-setting cold spell to start the week, dropping overnight temperatures to freezinglows across San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday morning, according to PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey.

Paso Robles hit a low of 21, exceeding the previous record of 23 on Feb. 4, 1955, Lindsey said. San Luis Obispo bottomed out at 27, below its 1955 record of 30 degrees.

Along the coast, Los Osos reached a low of 32 degrees.

Another night of freezing temperatures was expected Tuesday into Wednesday with overnight lows reaching the mid-20s in the North County and the low 30s in the coastal valleys, Lindsey said.

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning that runs from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday. With conditions like these, residents should be sure to protect sensitive plants and animals or bring them indoors.

Daytime temperatures will reach highs in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Looking ahead, conditions should gradually warm up through the rest of the week.

For those looking for shelter from the cold, warming centers are open in the county including 40 Prado in San Luis Obispo. Check their website https://friendsof40prado.org/warming-center/ or call 211 for current information on county warming centers.
