‘Significant storm’ will close Highway 1 in two places this weekend

Caltrans will close Highway 1 in two places this weekend, as a major storm rolls through the region.

According to a news release, Caltrans received confirmation from the National Weather Service on Friday that “a significant storm is in the forecast for the areas of Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide” in the Big Sur area.

Forecasts call for between 3 to 9 inches of rain across the Central Coast this weekend, with the greatest amounts along the North Coast toward Big Sur.

In response, the agency plans to close the roadway at Paul’s Slide starting 5 p.m. Saturday, following by Mud Creek at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Caltrans will have Geotech maintenance and construction units on call and prepared to inspect and clean up during daylight hours when the storm ends and it is safe to be onsite again, according to the release.

The gates on either side of the closures will be key-locked, Caltrans said, but will not be manned.

No one — including emergency services or Caltrans employees will be allowed to access the roadway until “a proper assessment can be made and any necessary cleanup has been completed,” the agency said.

Caltrans has been closing the highway in that region at key times since a major landslide decimated the roadway in May 2017.
