A South County independent who wants to put “people before politics” has entered the race for a seat on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, the second candidate who will challenge incumbent Jimmy Paulding in what is now a three-person contest.

Local business owner Tyler Brewer announced his candidacy for District 4 supervisor in the 2026 election, his campaign announced in a news release.

Brewer describes himself as an independent populist, according to his campaign website.

“I believe government should serve the people — not special interests, not political insiders, and not the wealthy elite,” he said. “District 4 deserves leadership that listens, acts and delivers results for the working families, farmers and small businesses who make our communities strong.”

Brewer owns Family Paralegal Associates — formerly known as Stuart Legal — in Arroyo Grande. The business, which assists with legal document preparation, is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, its website says. “As the owner of Family Paralegal Associates, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families face navigating complicated systems,” Brewer said. “I’m running to make government work better for the people it’s meant to serve.”

Brewer’s top issues listed on his campaign website include water storage and recycling, agriculture, public safety, affordable housing, addressing the root of homelessness through behavioral health solutions and government transparency.

Brewer will challenge Paulding, who announced his bid for reelection on June 26, and another local business owner and Republican candidate, Adam Verdin, who announced his campaign in early July.

District 4 spans communities including Arroyo Grande, Nipomo, Huasna, Edna Valley, California Valley and parts of unincorporated SLO County.

Brewer emphasized that his campaign will be grassroots-driven, focusing on direct outreach, volunteer participation and honest conversations with residents about the issues that matter most, the release said.

The primary election will be held on June 2, 2026.

New District 4 supervisor candidate makes statement on death of Charlie Kirk

On Sunday, Brewer issued a statement on his website condemning the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, which the candidate called “tragic.”

“While I did not always agree with Charlie Kirk, his life should never have been cut short over a debate,” the independent candidate wrote on his campaign website. “Violence has no place in our democracy. We may have strong differences of opinion, but those differences should be expressed through dialogue, not destruction.”

The statement continue: “What happened to Charlie is a reminder that we must stand firmly against political violence in all its forms. No one — regardless of their views — deserves to be targeted or harmed for speaking their mind. As a community, and as a nation, we must recommit ourselves to respectful discourse, to listening even when we disagree, and to protecting the fundamental principle that every voice has the right to be heard without fear of violence.”
