Here’s who’s leading the races to represent SLO County in Congress and State Assembly
Democrats lead the races to represent San Luis Obispo County in California State Assembly and Congress, according to a ballot count update from the California Secretary of State’s office on Tuesday.
The top two vote-getters for those races will advance to the general election in November, where voters will decide who wins the office.
The Secretary of State’s Office will certify the election results by July 15, according to its website.
California State Assembly: Districts 30 and 37
As of Tuesday, Democrats still lead the races to represent San Luis Obispo County on the California State Assembly.
SLO County is split into two Assembly districts, with most of the county packed into District 30 with parts of Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. District 37 represents Nipomo and parts of Santa Barbara County.
Democrat Dawn Addis leads the District 30 race with 41% of the vote, according to the Secretary of State Office’s most recent ballot count. Republican Vicki Nohrden maintained her second-place position with 36.5% of the vote.
As the top two vote-getters, Addis and Nohrden will compete for the seat in the November general election.
The lineup for the rest of the candidates didn’t budge either with the latest count. Jon Wizard held third place with 10.5% of the vote, Zoë Carter followed with 8.6% and John Drake with 3.5%, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
Though Addis leads the district, Nohrden is the front-runner in San Luis Obispo County with 43.7% of the vote and Addis follows with 40.4%. Addis performed best in Santa Cruz County with 42.9% of the vote, where Nohrden took 22.6%, according to the most recent ballot-count update.
Unlike the district-wide results, Carter beat Wizard in SLO County, taking home 7% of the vote to Wizard’s 6.1%. Drake trailed with 2.9% of the vote in the county, the Secretary of State’s Office reported.
The two-year seat for District 37 was also on the ballot — with three candidates competing to represent Santa Barbara County and Nipomo.
Democrat Gregg Hart kept his lead Tuesday with 56.2% of the vote. He’ll compete in the general election against Republican Mike Stoker, who took 40.5% of the vote. Bruce Wallach trailed with 3.3% of the vote, according to the most recent ballot count.
Stoker, the Republican candidate, is actually faring much better in San Luis Obispo County — taking the lead with 54.8% of the vote. Hart, a Democrat, followed with 40.9%. Wallace trailed with 4.4% of the vote in the county.
Hart, however, is leading by a landslide in Santa Barbara County, where he holds 57.7% of the vote. Stoker and Wallach followed with 39.1% and 3.2%, respectively.
U.S. House of Representatives: Districts 19 and 24
Two Central Coast congressmen are on their way to defend their seats on the House of Representatives in November.
With the re-drawn district map, two Congress members will represent SLO County instead of one.
The 24th Congressional District used to include all of SLO County. The new boundaries, however, moved northern cities such as Paso Robles and Atascadero into the new District 19, while the rest of the county remains in District 24.
Incumbent Rep. Salud Carbajal has maintained a 60.1% lead in the race to represent District 24, according to the latest ballot-count update. Republican Brad Allen followed with 31%, and he will compete with Carbajal for the seat during the November general election.
Michele R. Weslander Quaid and Jeff Frankenfiled trailed with 7.5% and 1.5% of the vote, respectively.
Carbajal did almost as well in San Luis Obispo County as he did in the whole district, with 59.9% of the county’s vote. Allen performed similarly here as he did in the rest of the district, picking up 32.9% of the local vote. Quaid fared worse in SLO County with 6.1% of the vote, and Frankenfield took 1.1% of the county’s vote.
For District 19, incumbent Rep. Jimmy Panetta was ahead with 67.4% of the vote, followed by Republican talk show host and small business owner Jeff Gorman with 23.3%.
Panetta and Gorman will face off for the seat in the general election.
Trailing them were Dalila Epperson with 6.4% and Douglas Deitch with 3%.
In San Luis Obispo County, Gorman beat Panetta with 45% of the vote. Panetta took 43.2% of the local vote.
