Dawn Ortiz-Legg talks to supporters at her election night party in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, as returns showed her witih a strong lead in the District 3 supervisor’s race.

Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg won the race for the District 3 seat on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors.

As of the final election night results released around 1 a.m., Ortiz-Legg led with about 64.9% of the 8,395 votes cast in the district. She needs more than 50% to secure a victory and prevent the race from advancing to the November general election.

The 1 a.m. count included the results from 446 ballots cast at the polls, along with 7,949 mail-in ballots cast before Election Day.

“I’m really grateful for having a good lead at this point,” Ortiz-Legg said around 11 p.m. on election night. “You can’t thank the voters enough for supporting my candidacy.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Ortiz-Legg to the board in 2020 following the death of Supervisor Adam Hill. Because of that, the election is for a partial, two-year term using the district’s old 2010 boundaries, not the new lines established during the county’s redistricting process.

Three candidates were on the ballot Tuesday night: incumbent Ortiz-Legg, insurance business owner Stacy Korsgaden and retired barber Arnold Ruiz.

As of the 1 a.m. release, Korsgaden had 31.8% of the vote. Ruiz trailed far behind with 3.3% of the vote.

It’s not Korsgaden’s first time on the ballot for District 3. In 2020, she ran for the open seat and nearly defeated the incumbent Hill.

Korsgaden did not respond to the Tribune’s request for comment Tuesday night.

The vote tallies are subject to change over the coming days as the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office processes more last-minute and provisional ballots.

Final election results could take up until early July to be certified.

“I’m feeling really optimistic, but I’d like to see more results,” Ortiz-Legg said early in the night. “It’s looking good, yet you just never know.”
