Who do SLO County Democrats want for president? Yep, it’s Bernie Sanders
Much like the rest of California, San Luis Obispo County was feeling the Bern on Super Tuesday.
In the Tuesday presidential primary election, Bernie Sanders was the clear front-runner among the Democratic candidates.
As of the final election night release, with 100% of precincts reporting, Sanders had 30% of the local vote, while former Vice President Joe Biden had increased to 23%. Elizabeth Warren stayed at 14% and Mike Bloomberg dropped to 12%.
Tulsi Gabbard trailed far behind the rest of the pack with only 0.8% of the vote, behind other candidates who have since dropped out of the race like Pete Buttigieg (9%) and Amy Klobuchar (5%).
Though results from all precincts have been recorded, the final results are still pending outstanding vote-by-mail and conditional ballots. The final tallies could take days or up to three weeks.
The midnight SLO County results included 21,611 vote-by-mail ballots received by the elections office ahead of Tuesday, and 11,764 counted at polling places. It is unclear when the next count will be released by the County Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
The results echoed preliminary California results, where Sanders was projected to win the state soon after the polls closed at 8 p.m.
Nationally, Biden secured Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia on Super Tuesday, while Sanders also has Colorado, Utah and Vermont. As of Wednesday morning, Maine was still too close to close to call, though Biden is in the lead.
President Donald Trump held down 93% of the Republican vote in SLO County on Tuesday night, with Joe Walsh and Bill Weld each bringing in just over 2%.
In the last presidential election in 2016, San Luis Obispo County swung mostly Democrat, with 50% of voters choosing Hillary Clinton, and 41.8% voting for Trump.
