‘Did $95 worth of robocalls get your attention?’ KKK caller has new message for SLO County

A robocaller claiming to represent a group affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan re-emerged on Thursday with a new message for San Luis Obispo County voters.

The caller — who said she’s associated with “the Daughters of the Hero’s Cross KKK” — began placing calls to residents on Tuesday urging them to support District 3 Supervisor Adam Hill while using homophobic slurs against Stacy Korsgaden, his opponent, who is a lesbian.

The calls began with a woman saying, “Back in the day, the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan awarded my granddaddy the Hero’s Cross.”

Both Hill and Korsgaden denounced the call, referring to it as “sleazy” and “pathetic.”

“This is the natural result of more than nine years of vicious personal attacks on me and people close to me,” Hill told The Tribune.

New message for SLO County voters

The latest message, which can be heard by calling 805-242-3591, features the same woman from the previous call, although her cartoonish Southern accent is somewhat diminished for most of the message.

“Did $95 worth of robocalls get your attention?” she asks listeners at the beginning. “Let’s talk about it.”

She claims the previous call used “satire and lampoon, not unlike ‘Saturday Night Live’ skits or ‘South Park’ episodes,” but it wasn’t fake because she’s not a paid actress and “my granddaddy really did receive the Hero’s Cross from the KKK.”

The message goes on to address unproven allegations regarding offensive emails sent to radio host Dave Congalton from Hill’s home. The woman then clearly states neither candidate was involved in placing the previous call.

“It’s important to tell you the robocall was not paid for, nor authorized, by Adam Hill or Stacy Korsgaden, or any committee controlled by either candidate,” she says.

The county District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday via Twitter it is investigating the robocalls and asked for the public’s help in identifying the caller.

Korsgaden personally requested that the office investigate the incident, according to Terry O’Farrell, chief investigator.

She also said she planned to file a complaint with the Fair Political Practices Commission and/or the Federal Communications Commission to determine the source of the robocalls.

Anyone with information about the source of the robocall is encouraged to contact the county District Attorney’s Office chief of investigations at 805-781-5800.
