Woman fakes kidnapping to speed up search for friend’s missing car, Texas cops say
A woman filed a false police report in the hopes that it would force cops to find her friend’s stolen car faster, Texas authorities said.
Police received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. June 30 about a stolen vehicle, according to a July 1 news release from the El Paso Police Department.
Shortly after, a 19-year-old woman reported that her child was missing and she believed the person who stole her friend’s vehicle, reported in the first call, also took her child, according to police.
Police said they conducted “an extensive search” and found the vehicle, but the child was still missing.
Crimes Against Persons detectives were able to determine the missing child did not exist, police said.
According to authorities, the woman “provided a fictitious name of a child to have police locate her friend’s vehicle quickly.”
She was arrested on a charge of false alarm or report and booked at the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $5,000 bond, according to police.
