Dad killed 2-month old while mom was in the hospital, officials say. He’s sentenced
An Oklahoma man received a prison sentence in connection to the 2021 death of his 2-month-old son.
Colten Thompson was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years June 14, according to court documents.
Around 1:15 a.m. on Nov. 28, 2021, authorities were called to a home in Pawnee for reports of a 2-month-old baby who was unresponsive, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.
The baby, later identified in news articles as Logan, was taken to a hospital. He died on Nov. 30, officials said.
Court records said Logan suffered from two different brain bleeds, a skull fracture and brain swelling at the hands of Thompson, McClatchy News previously reported. Logan’s mother told investigators that Thompson did not do well with children and she would call every hour to check on the baby.
McClatchy News reached out to Thompson’s attorney on June 18 but did not immediately hear back.
Thompson lived at the home with Logan and Logan’s mother, according to court records. When Logan was assaulted, his mother was in the hospital with COVID-19, according to KOTV.
Logan’s grandmother called 911 after Thompson told his girlfriend that the baby “was not acting right,” officials said.
Thompson told investigators he became angry Logan was crying and said he grabbed him out of his bouncer, by one arm, then dropped him on a bed, KOTV reported.
“For that little two-month-old, we’re going to make sure he has justice,” Brook Arbeitman with the OSBI told the news outlet in 2021.
On Feb. 2, 2024, Thompson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse, according to court records.
“Neither side got what we wanted, but it was some kind of justice after over two years,” Angela Boyett, Logan’s grandmother, told KFOR. “ ... We don’t have to see his face ever again.”
Pawnee is a 95-mile drive northeast of Oklahoma City.
