Looking for work? PG&E is hiring for 2 Diablo Canyon outages
Looking for work? Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is hiring for two upcoming outages at Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
PG&E is hosting an Outage Hiring Information Fair where you can learn about job opportunities for their upcoming refueling project.
Here’s what to know:
When is PG&E job fair? Where?
PG&E will hold its hiring fair on Thursday, April 2, at Embassy Suites, 333 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo, according to a PG&E news release.
Information sessions will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m.
In addition to Diablo Canyon outage jobs, the job fair will cover full-time positions with PG&E, veterans’ programs and job openings with the utility company’s business partners.
Attendees are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resumes, the release said.
When are outages scheduled at Diablo Canyon Power Plant?
Diablo Canyon, which sits on about 1,000 acres of land in San Luis Obispo County, provides “low-cost, carbon-free electricity” for California residents, PG&E said on its website.
The power plan generates about 9% of California’s total electrical supply, making it the state’s largest source of clean energy.
Diablo Canyon will conduct outages in the fall of 2026 and the spring of 2027, according to PG&E.
During a scheduled outage, PG&E shuts down one of Diablo Canyon’s two nuclear reactors for refueling, a process that lasts about a month, PG&E spokesperson Suzanne Hosn previously told The Tribune.
Workers also perform maintenance on the massive turbine, The Tribune previously reported.
PG&E refuels each of its twin reactors once every 18 to 20 months, according to Tribune archives.
Since demand for energy is lower in the spring and fall, power plants schedule routine outages during these months, according to Duke Energy.
What do I need to qualify?
When nuclear power plants plan outages, companies will hire extra staff to help with the workload.
Diablo Canyon temporarily hired roughly 1,000 extra workers during the outage in the spring of 2024, Hosn previously told The Tribune.
In addition to local employees, PG&E brought in traveling teams for “short-term projects that require special training, qualifications and skill sets,” Hosn said.
According to hiring website ZipRecruiter, qualifications for nuclear power plant outage jobs can include:
- An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering or a related field
- Experience at a power plant
- Planning and strategy-making skills
Certifications may also be required.
The U.S. Department of Energy said these nuclear power plant jobs do not require an engineering degree:
- Reactor operator
- Radiation protection technician
- Construction worker
- Welder or welding inspector
- Diver
- Outage planner
- Physical security
What jobs are available now at Diablo Canyon?
Based in Oakland, PG&E employs 28,000 workers throughout Northern and Central California.
The utility company said it offers “comprehensive benefits” such as wellness programs and medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, well as training, mentoring, and leadership development.
As of Monday, March 30, these job openings were available at Diablo Canyon Power Plant, according to the PG&E careers page:
- Nuclear instructor
- Nuclear maintenance supervisor
