Dustin McCaslin of Bakersfield was flying his drone over the waters off Pismo Beach last week when he came upon a remarkable sight: a pod of humpback whales and mass of sea lions feeding at the surface.
The video starts with what looks to be about 50 sea lions chasing fish in a frenzy. Quickly joining them in the frame are the three whales, diving and spouting as the drone tracks their shadowy shapes in the water.
McCaslin captured the footage July 13 and says he loves to video sea life whenever he can (in 2015, he shot footage of a shark in Pismo). He said it’s been his goal for a long time to film a group of whales.
“My eyes (were) glued to the screen watching these massive creatures and seals, and I realized I’m the only one in the world seeing this,” McCaslin said.
