Tomato Spectacular is returning to Cal Poly. How to score new garden plants
Heirlooms, cherries and sungolds galore: Cal Poly’s annual Tomato Spectacular sale is back, returning this weekend with dozens of colorful varieties of tomato plants — in addition to some new garden offerings.
The annual plant sale will occur on Saturday at the Poly Plant Shop from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., or until the plants sell out, according to the Poly Plant Shop website.
Customers can expect to find some standard varieties at the sale, in addition to more unique tomato plants like the multicolor “Brad’s Atomic Grape” variety, described in the sale catalog as a “a full-blown assault on the senses.”
The catalog showed over 100 varieties slated to be up for grabs on Saturday, featuring a range of shapes, sizes and colors suited to fit any tomato need.
And though tomatoes are the main event, Cal Poly Plant Sciences will also be selling a range of pepper, tomatillo and herb plants at the sale.
The catalog showed a few varieties of habaneros and jalapeños, as well as more obscure peppers, like the Apocalypse Scorpion, the Chocolate Habanero and the Chiltepin — plant that produces tiny, 1/2-inch peppers that pack a mighty punch.
Basil plants, including Thai, Persian and lettuce leaf varieties, were slated to be for sale, as well as Milpero tomatillos.
According to the catalog, the 4-inch potted plants would be sold for $7 each. Customers were encouraged to pop in to the sale early to find the best selection.
Catalogs featuring the available varieties of all plants can be downloaded for free from the Cal Poly Plant Shop’s website.
