U.S. Customs and Border Protection will no longer recruit at Cal Poly’s career fair, reversing course from earlier this month, Mustang News first reported Tuesday.

The immigration law enforcement agency was originally slated to show at the fair on Wednesday — but on Tuesday, Customs and Border Protection told the university it would not be at the event, citing the government shutdown as the reason, university spokesperson Matt Lazier told The Tribune.

Customs and Border Protection is an immigration law enforcement agency housed under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is separate from ICE, which is housed under the same department.

Mustang News reported Tuesday that the scheduled appearance did ignite pushback from students and faculty at the SLO campus prior to the agency’s cancellation.

Lazier previously told The Tribune the university cannot bar employers from the career fair unless the employer violates campus policies.
