Heading to SLO for Cal Poly Open House this weekend? Here’s what to know
Cal Poly’s Open House kicks off this Thursday — and locals and visitors alike should prepare for some road closures and increased traffic, a university news release said Monday.
The weekend will offer a “glimpse into life as a Mustang,” according to the university.
It’ll include a night at the downtown San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market, opportunities for admitted students to explore campus and Saturday’s Poly Royal parade, according to the event website. The long-awaited Poly Royal Rodeo will also take place the same weekend.
And with all the excitement will come increased traffic in San Luis Obispo as prospective students, their families, alumni and Cal Poly supporters gather to celebrate, the release said.
“Open House is one of the most popular events on campus each year, and it’s going to be crowded,” the university said.
How should drivers, pedestrians prepare for Cal Poly’s Open House?
Cal Poly offered some advice for visitors and SLO residents attempting to navigate the busy weekend.
“The potential for accidents increases with so many new visitors to campus and the city,” the release said. “However, with a little planning and preparation everyone can safely experience the life of a Cal Poly Mustang.”
Wearing comfortable shoes and planning for a lot of walking was No. 1 on the list, according to the release.
Visitors should also leave their electric scooters, one-wheels and skateboards at home, since these devices are not allowed on campus, the university said.
Cal Poly encouraged current students to take advantage of the Mustang Shuttle and encouraged visitors to use SLOTransit, which will be offering free rides to attendees on Friday and Saturday, the release said.
“Simply tell the bus driver you are bound for Cal Poly Open House,” it said.
As far as parking goes, a pre-paid permit will be required for visitors hoping to park on campus, according to the university — and shuttles will be available between campus and local hotels for those without permits as well.
The weekend will also be accompanied by a few road closures, the university said.
California Boulevard will be closed from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, according to the release. Additionally, University Drive will close at Highland Drive from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On Saturday, Grand Avenue will close at Deer Road for the Poly Royal parade from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. North Perimeter at Village Drive will also close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturday, as will University Drive.
