Caltrans to close Highway 1 lanes to reduce fire risk. Here’s when and where
Drivers should expect traffic delays while traveling along Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo County, according to Caltrans.
The California Department of Transportation will temporarily close both shoulders of the highway in Cambria for most of a day to cut back dense vegetation in the area, according to a Friday news release.
While the project is underway, the state road agency will use new technology to reduce wildfire risk in the area.
Here’s what to know:
Where will Highway 1 lanes close?
Drivers traveling in both directions of Highway 1 will encounter shoulder closures on Highway 1 between Burton Drive and Ardath Drive in Cambria, Caltrans said in the release.
When is roadwork on emergency stopping lanes?
The emergency stopping lanes will be shut down for roadside work from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, the state road agency said.
Why is Caltrans closing Highway 1 shoulders?
Caltrans is working to reduce plant growth along Highway 1 to increase visibility for drivers and reduce the risk for wildland fires in Cambria, the release said.
The state road agency said it’s using new machinery to “create strategic buffers between areas of dry brush and nearby homes and businesses.”
That machinery was created by BurnBot Inc., a San Francisco-based business devoted to developing technology to prevent wildfires in the western United States, according to the company’s website.
Caltrans: Slow down in road work zones
Caltrans urged travelers on Highway 1 to drive slowly and carefully while roadside shoulders are shut down, according to the release.
“Travelers should be aware of these roadside activities,” Caltrans said. “Electronic message boards will be present to alert the traveling public.”
