Cal Poly again ranks in the top 10 for ‘best value’ among California universities
Cal Poly has again ranked in the top 10 for “best value” among the leading universities in California.
The San Luis Obispo university ranked No. 6 in SmartAsset’s eighth annual ranking, which the investment adviser determines by compiling and comparing five metrics: starting salary for new graduates, in-state tuition, student living costs, scholarship and grant offerings, and the student retention rate, according to its website.
Cal Poly was the top-ranked California State University campus, landing directly behind UC San Diego and UC Berkeley and ahead of UC Davis, UC Irvine and UCLA.
Its average starting salary of $70,500 was better than each of the UCs in the top 10 save for Berkeley at $77,400.
The No. 1 school in the ranking was Cal Tech.
Cal Poly has placed 6th in California since 2019, when it was placed 5th by SmartAsset.
“We applied 25% weighting to starting salary, tuition and living costs,” SmartAsset’s website says. “We then gave 12.5% weighting to scholarships, grants and retention rate.”
To determine the rankings, SmartAsset used 2020 data from the National Center for Educational Statistics, 2021 Payscale data, data from the Institute for College Access & Success, College InSight and Peterson’s Undergraduate Financial Aid and Undergraduate Databases, according to its website.
