Cal Poly SLO received 63,200 applications for fall 2020

Applications for enrollment to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for fall 2020 classes dipped for a second year in a row.

About 63,200 people applied to become first-time freshman or transfer students — 3% fewer than the previous year.

The decline matches a trend reflected across the state, both in the California State University system, which received about 7% fewer applications across the 23 campuses compared to last year, and at University of California schools.

While fewer people sought admission into UC and CSU schools than previous years, Cal Poly remains a popular choice for those who want to attend university in the Golden State.

About 7.5% of all applications received by the CSU system were to Cal Poly.

Competition for enrollment at the “Learn by doing” university continues to be stiff. Last year, the admissions office turned down three of every four applicants.

Cal Poly accepted 16,490 students to fill 5,351 seats out of 65,155 applicants for fall 2019 classes.

The university has not yet determined how many applicants will be offered enrollment for fall 2020 admission.

Some applicants have already received noticed of acceptance. All applicants will find out if they made the cut by April 1.
