Man arrested for robbing elderly SLO resident, taking cell phone, police say
A man was arrested after allegedly robbing another man on the street in San Luis Obispo on Monday.
Around 6:18 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery of an elderly victim on the 400 block of Prado Road, the San Luis Obispo Police Department said in a news release.
Police identified Anthony Smith, a 60-year-old unhoused resident of SLO, as the suspect, the release said.
An investigation found that Smith had approached the elderly man from behind, put his hands on the man’s shoulders and told him not to turn around, the release said.
Smith took the man’s phone from his pocket, searched him for additional items and then fled, the release said.
The man was not injured during the robbery, the release said.
Officers soon after located Smith near the intersection of Higuera Street and Granada Drive and recovered the stolen phone, the release said.
Smith, who was on parole for burglary, was arrested and booked into the SLO County jail on suspicion of three felony charges of robbery, elder abuse and a parole violation, the release said.
Because he was on parole for a prior felony conviction, he also faces prison term enhancements, according to the jail’s Who’s in Custody database.
